This book, of which I have an original edition, was first published in 1912. It is the biography of an Indian elephant taken ina roundup (!) of wild elephants - yes, they had roundups in India in the late 1800's and early 1900's. It follows the young elephant from its youthful life in the herd through its capture, domestication and decades of loyal service to its master. The ending will break your heart. I read it to my daughter when she was six or seven years old, and re-read it recently for my own pleasure. Eardley-Wilmot observes nature as carefully as Kipling, and writes as well, though not with Kipling's fictional twist. The Life of an Elephant comes as close to reconstructing the real life of its subject as a book can come, and it captures an era, now long gone, that is rich and colorful and true to historical facts. Highly recommended.
